About International Sandwich Day

August is National Sandwich Month a time that celebrates the diverse recipes and chefs that create new sandwiches for the menu every year. Sandwiches are easy to make, filling, and healthy. Every country has special sandwiches that are made for an easy lunch or dinner. August is a time to try new sandwich recipes, have a get together with sandwiches, or go out to restaurant to try a new item on the menu.
Go to your local library and get some cookbooks with sandwich recipes try some at home. Check your local restaurants for sandwich special this month. Invite friends or family over for a sandwich party where people bring different sandwiches to eat. Look online for sandwich recipes made in the US and other countries. Stop by your local restaurant and try a new type of sandwich this month.
International History of the Sandwich
In 50 BCE in Rome there were fast food counters that served flatbread with olives, meat, and cheese with fermented fish sauce. These were easy meals that held meat without a container. This was one of first type of sandwiches ever made. It was an easy meal to make for workers and families.

In 1350 France in Belgium they served open faced sandwiches topped with meat, cheese, vegetable, and condiments. In 1840 in the US the railroad created a need for easy food to serve and carry. Railroad station sold sandwiches to travelers between two slices of bread wrapped in paper. They used cold cuts meats that did not perish or spoil for several hours that were smoked and salted.

In the 18th century the Earl of Sandwich loved to gamble. He ordered his valet to bring him some meat between two slices of bread so he could continue gambling
at the casino. He did not have use utensils and did not have to stop his game.
In the UK sandwiches of beef and other meats, gained popularity for the wealthy to the working class. It was an easy convenient meal for workers when the UK became industrialized. The trend of making sandwiches continued to spread across Europe.

In France cafes served a grilled ham and cheese sandwich called Croque Monsieur. It was served with a white bechamel sauce made with butter, flour, milk, salt and nutmeg. Italy Introduced the panni sandwich a term that means small breads. The most popular bread they used in the recipe is ciabatta. The bread is served with cheese, cured meats, and chopped vegetables. Many restaurants serve panni sandwiches.
Germans created meat sandwiches with pork or veal served on a bun with condiments and vegetables. They like filling tasty meats. Spain had a sandwich on a baguette filled with ingredients like chorizo, serrano, ham, with veggies. It was an easy meal for workers and students.

The deli sandwich in the US started with the arrival of European immigrants. Jewish people from East Europe played a big role in introducing deli sandwiches pastrami, or corn beef on rye bread. New York. Philadelphia, other cities became popular due to their deli sandwiches with customers.
Every city and state developed a special recipe for sandwiches in the US. Popular sandwiches were hamburgers, the lobster roll, BLT and grilled cheese. In Alabama they served a BBQ Chicken Sandwich with White Sauce. Arizona was known for the Sonoran Hot Dog with bacon, on a soft roll with pinto beans, jalapenos and onions. California served a turkey avocado sandwich, CT a lobster roll due to towns and cities along the coast.
Florida is credited with the Cuban sandwich pork, ham, Swiss cheese, on Cuban bread. Illinois came up with the Italian Beef sandwich, Maine; a Lobster BLT, Maryland; Crab Cake Sandwich, New York; Pastrami on Rye and Pennsylvania a Philly Steak.
