National Celiac Disease Awareness Day is celebrated on September 13. Many men and women suffer from celiac disease and symptoms that make it hard to work, run a household, or attend school. Dr. Samuel Gee was a researcher that discovered the symptoms of the disease could be treated through special diet. This holiday is celebrated on this date.

What Is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease caused by gluten found in wheat, rye, barley and other grains. This disease can occur in children, adults, and seniors at any time. The body produces an immune response to the protein in the grains and it attacks the villi in the small intestine. The body cannot absorb nutrients and it lead to symptoms and illness.

Some of the symptoms are abdominal pain, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, anemia, joint pain, nausea, and weight loss. Some people do not have celiac but are allergic to wheat and suffer sensitivity to eating it.

Gluten is found in wheat, durum, semolina, spelt, rye, and barley. Bread, pasta, baked goods and processed food products can have gluten in them. Those that have the illness develop symptoms that make it hard to accomplish everyday tasks.

You should read the labels and find a healthcare provider that can help test you or a family member for celiac and work with you on changing your diet. At this time diet is the only way to treat celiac disease. A dietitian or nutritionist can help you change your diet and give you suggestions on shopping and meal preparation.
