What Did Detective Sherlock Holmes Like to Eat?

In the detective novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the detective Sherlock Holmes had a simple diet. He lived in the Victorian era when men did not cook for themselves or do housework. He was a bachelor that had a housekeeper and landlady that cooked, cleaned, and did the laundry. Her name was Mrs. Hudson. Often Holmes dined in local restaurants. when not eating at home.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner With Sherlock Holmes


Sherlock Holmes ate breakfast at 7 am most mornings. He had coffee, ham and eggs, eggs and bacon, toast, hard boiled eggs, fruit, scones, fish, and canned or fresh vegetables. His housekeeper Mrs. Hudson made him breakfast and dinner most days. In one novel Mrs. Hudson made curried chicken for breakfast as an extra entree. Sometimes for breakfast Sherlock had herring that was salted, smoked and baked in butter.


At lunch Sherlock Holmes often ate a sandwich at a local restaurant with coffee or a beer. He sometimes made a cold beef sandwich for himself from leftover beef and put the cold beef between two slices of bread. At times he carried the sandwich with him when he went out to investigate a crime scene. He cared more about solving the crime than eating.


Dinner was a simple meal for Sherlock Holmes. He often had steamed green beans, roasted pheasant or woodcock, roast beef , and foie gras. He drank dry white wine, port, and beer. He one novel he eats oysters and drinks a bottle of white, burgundy.


Sometimes Sherlock Holmes ate what might be considered a snack. In one novel he eat nuts and drinks port and in another munches on biscuits. When Holmes and Watson go fishing and catch trout they bring it home. Mrs. Watson cooks the trout, and they eat it for dinner.

The Role of Men in Victorian Times


Men did not cook or clean in Victorian times it was considered the woman's job. Sherlock Holmes was a bachelor that had a housekeeper that cooked two meals a day for him. Often, he had leftovers that he ate when he dined home. He often went out to eat at a local restaurant for some meals. He ate at Italian restaurants

vegetarian, inns, and cafes.

Sherlock Holmes had money to employ a woman to do the work, eat out, and travel. He was a user of tobacco, alcohol, and cocaine. He used drugs because he became bored with everyday life and when not investigating crimes the drugs provide him with a high or fulfillment. He drinks brandy, beer, and wine. Despite his addiction he has a sharp mind and is an excellent detective.

Sherlock Holmes is a complex character developed by Arthur Conan Doyle and one of the most well-known detectives in mystery crime genre.
