Soul cakes are made often with fruit and nuts for Halloween or All Soul's Day. The cake bridges the pagan and Christian religions representing Halloween and All Souls Day. This is a celebration for the dead, uses bonfires to ward off evil spirits, people wear colorful costumes, and tell fortunes.

Soul cakes were used for trick or treating during medieval times. Kids would go from to house singing or dancing on November 2 and ask for a soul cake. It was said each cake had a prayer said for the person that received it. Those receiving soul cakes often said prayers in exchange for dead relatives. It was a way of giving cookies and cakes instead of alms during Halloween, All Soul's Day, and All Saints Day.
