Sustainable eating during Earth Month can lead to a healthier diet. Your diet should include eating grassfed beef, free range poultry, wild caught fish, and more fresh fruits and vegetable. Cutting down on the portion size of meat and poultry will be a positive change in your diet.

Buy produce from your local farm markets and farmers. Support supermarkets that carry locally raised food. Look for fruits and vegetables in season as they will be less expensive. If you are a gardener, try raising your own organic vegetables and herbs in pots or in a small garden.


Eat More Vegetables Less Meat and Poultry


Consumers tend to eat large portions of meat and poultry. Try planning meals with smaller portions of meat replaced by more vegetables. Buy smaller cuts of meat cut in half and save for another meal. Think of meals like Pork with a salad, and sautéed cabbage. Beef stew with carrots, peppers, mushrooms and spinach, pasta with marinara sauce and a salad.

Use leftover bones and vegetable to make broth for soups. Leftover vegetable can be use in stews and salads. If you have a garden use leftover vegetables and food to make a compost pile to add to the soil. Get a rain barrel or container to use rain water for outdoor or indoor plants. Save leftover vegetable, meat, chicken, fruits or vegetables for another meal. Buy less if you find your buy too much and food spoils.


Use cloth bags to shop or choose paper instead of plastic. Get rid of plastic containers for food storage. Use glass containers or other sustainable materials. Do not heat food up in plastic containers in the microwave.

Look at recipes sites and cookbooks and plan your meals for the week. Go shopping and buy the ingredients. Keep it simple if your pressed for time. Crockpot meals or sheet pan recipes are easy to make and save time. You can cook meat, poultry, fish, chicken and vegetables on one sheet pan in the oven on bake or roast.

Another place to find this product is at the local farms in your region. Choose smaller portions of meat and include more vegetables with the meal. Visit local farms many raise and sell meat and poultry.

There are now many varieties of apples, berries, and exotic fruit. Every week try a new product as part of your menus. With produce try some new type of greens for salad, tomatoes, peppers, vegetables add variety of your meals. Ask the produce manager at your local supermarket for some advice or suggestion.

We all eat processed food at times. Cut down on processed and junk food .Try for eating processed food in moderation. Eat less snack foods and baked good. Try to include more vegetable, fruits in your diet. Cut back on white bread and try rye, whole wheat, and pumpernickel instead.


Basmati white rice is recommended by dietitians as a good white rice to eat in moderation. Brown rice provides more fiber and nutrition to your diet as well as wild rice, black rice, and red. Whole wheat pasta is recommended but if you have allergies to wheat gluten free is a better alternative.
