Small plate dining has been a trend in restaurant and at home since 2024. It has many benefits for restaurants and cooking at home. Below are some of the reasons you should consider trying it


  • Smaller plates of food reduces calories and portion size promoting eating mindfully and helping those trying to lose weight.


  • At the table smaller plates encourages conversation and socializing among family or guests. It is a way to get people to try different kinds of food.


  • Less food creates a more relaxed atmosphere for eating and relives the stress of trying to eat a large plate of food.


  • Smaller portion give the cook the opportunity to introduce more fruits, and vegetable to the meal. It allows you to try a variety of food and experiment.


  • In a restaurant or home small plates encourages other to share and communicate with each other. It is an excellent method to get people to try new dishes.


  • Small plates are similar to pot luck dinners or buffets but more portion controlled. Everyone can try different types of food at a slower pace


  • Smaller plates reduces food waste and save money. You spend less on ingredients or entrees and there often is less food leftover.

How to Create Healthy Small Plates At Home

  • A healthy plate should include healthy protein that takes up 1/4 of the plate. Best options are grass fed meat, poultry without hormones or antibiotics, and wild caught fish. Other sources of protein are eggs and beans.


  • Fresh fruits and vegetables should be 1/2 of your plate. You can serve salads, cooked vegetables, or fresh or frozen fruit. Recipes with pasta, rice, beans, and vegetables work well. Look for recipes online or in cookbooks at the local library.


  • You should include whole grains in your meal rye, pumpernickel or whole wheat bread contain more fiber. Brown rice and whole wheat pasta have more fiber and nutrition than white. Use healthy oils like extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil to cook.


  • Include eggs, cheese yogurt and milk in your diet. Drink sugar free beverages like Selzer water, coffee, tea, and water with lemon or lime juice.
